National academic training

Graduate in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Salamanca.. Realizó la residencia en la He has specialised in Cardiology at the Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre in Madrid, where he has spent most of his professional career.

From 2015 to 2017 he was the coordinator of the Haemodynamics and Interventional Cardiology Unit, and from 2010 to 2017 he was a tutor for residents in the Cardiology Department.

In 2017 he joined the Clínica Universidad de Navarra as co-director of the Department of Cardiology at the Madrid site and as head of Interventional Cardiology.

After completing this stage, from February 2022 he will be collaborating with the Interventional Cardiology Unit at the Ruber Internacional Hospital.

He has completed the Hospital Management Excellence Programme: towards value in health, ESADE Business School (October 2018 – June 2019).

Professional experience

His preferred field of specialisation is haemodynamics and interventional cardiology. He was accredited in this subspecialty in 2004 by the Spanish Society of Cardiology. He has extensive experience in minimally invasive treatment of complex coronary artery disease (chronic occlusions, multivessel disease) and congenital and structural heart disease. He regularly acts as a national and international proctor of novel techniques (closure of patent foramen ovale, atrial septal defect, left atrial appendage, peri-valvular leaks).

Research, teaching and publications

Co-author of a dozen specialised books, and has published more than 90 articles in national and international journals. He has also made more than 250 presentations at national and international conferences

In the field of research, he has participated in more than 40 multicentre and international projects, in several of them as principal investigator. He is also a trustee of the Epic Foundation, dedicated to education and research in interventional cardiology.

Other merits

He was Secretary of the Board of Directors of the Section of Haemodynamics and Interventional Cardiology of the Spanish Society of Cardiology between 2012 and 2015. He is a member of nine societies and scientific commissions in the field of his speciality, and has been on the editorial board of the Revista Española de Cardiología since 2008 and REC Interventional Cardiology since 2018.
